Gene and Verna Descans welcomed Joseph on June 24, 1964, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents divorced and when he was seven years old, he moved to San Diego, California with his mother and younger sister, Debbie. Joseph graduated from Torrey Pines High School in 1982 and earned a BA in Literature with minor in Spanish from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2000.

Joseph currently resides in San Diego with his four kids, two cats, and six hens. He is a speaker, contractor, freelance writer, editor, writing coach, cat-in-a-tree rescuer, and a former professional surfer, He enjoys surfing, fishing, and snowboarding with his four children, Lily, Giuseppe, Abraham, Hezekiah, and friends.
